Michelle Kitchen, BSN, RN, CCRN, CMC, a Texas Health Huguley Hospital Fort Worth South charge nurse in the cardiac ICU, won the 2015 Texas Region GEM (Giving Excellence Meaning) Award in the category of Clinical Nursing, Inpatient. This annual award is presented by Nurse.com to nurses nationwide.
GEM Award nominees are nominated by their colleagues and reviewed by a panel of nurse leaders who serve as judges, selecting winners in six categories. Regional winners then move on to a national round where one national winner is chosen in each category.
Kitchen, of Burleson, was selected from 30 finalists in the Texas region. She holds national certification in Critical Care and Cardiac Medicine and is a team leader on the Rapid Response Team. She was nominated by her colleagues for her energy and passion in nursing and her leadership as a charge nurse.
“First and foremost, I am humbled,” says Kitchen. “It is a humbling experience to have peers and mentors take the time and thought to nominate me for such an award.”
As well as her educational accomplishments, Kitchen has worked on several teams of physicians, administrators, and peers to develop and implement various patient care protocols. She has also presented nationally at a Radiology Convention on acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Winning this award has served as a reminder of why she is a nurse, and Kitchen says that, “Caring at the bedside with patients is a passion of mine.”
