One hundred registered nurses from the greater Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex are honored for making a significant difference to the profession of nursing and in the lives of patients, peers, and the community.
For more than 15 years, Ms. Picton has served the community as a nurse practitioner on Huguley’s Mobile Health Services Bus, and she now serves Huguley employees and volunteers with its Employee Health and Wellness Services program.
Ms. Picton was nominated by licensed paramedic Joe Wascomb, who has worked with Jana on Huguley’s Mobile Health Services bus for many years. “Jana’s compassion is remarkable. If she has screened one of our patients and they require follow-up care, she will often go with them to their next appointments if they are anxious. She'll even drive them if they don't have transportation. Three years ago, she walked one patient of ours through the diagnosis and treatment of a brain cyst. To this day, she still goes with the patient to the CT scans to make sure the cyst hasn't grown,” says Mr. Wascomb.
In addition to serving the community through the Huguley Mobile Health Services Bus, Ms. Picton has mentored women through a Job Corps program at her church, First Baptist Church of Burleson.
Ms. Picton serves as a preferred preceptor to nursing, nurse practitioner, and medical students from five local colleges. She is an adjunct professor at one university and teaches community health clinicals.
“As a nurse practitioner, Jana has saved many lives by detecting cancers, diseases and severe heart conditions, and she has provided preventative care to countless others,” Mr. Wascomb continues. “She’s taught and inspired many students in medical fields, and served as a mentor to help relieve poverty for women and their families. She lives our mission—to further the healing ministry of Christ—both in her professional and personal life.”
Ms. Picton has lived in Burleson for more than 20 years. Her four children are all graduates of Burleson High School.
The 2011 Great 100 nurses will be recognized at the twenty-first annual Great 100 Nurses Celebration, a gala held at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas on April 27.
