Texas Health Huguley Becomes Local Breast Milk Depot
Area breastfeeding moms who want to donate their surplus breast milk can now do so at Texas Health Huguley Hospital.
The Mother’s Milk Bank of North Texas has partnered with Texas Health Huguley to be a depot where moms can take their milk. Previously, the nearest locations were Cleburne, Arlington or the medical district of Fort Worth.
“We are delighted to be able to participate in such an important program with Mother’s Milk Bank of North Texas,” said Kathleen Harlow, RNC director of women services at Texas Health Huguley. “Study after study has shown that breast milk is the most nourishing food that a newborn can have. Breast milk is even more important for premature babies to thrive. We are eager to work with moms who want, and are able, to provide milk to our tiniest and most vulnerable population.”
Texas Health Huguley, which is working towards earning the prestigious Baby Friendly designation, emphasizes breast feeding. With encouragement and support from Mother’s Milk Bank of North Texas, Texas Health Huguley and other depot hospital locations help the Mother’s Milk Bank decrease the costs of providing breast milk to premature babies in neonatal intensive care units.
To donate milk, moms must complete an interview and screening. In addition, the milk will go through a screening and pasteurization process to guarantee the safety and quality of the milk before it makes it to those who need it most.
