Volunteers are Treasured at Texas Health Huguley

On April 19, Texas Health Huguley Hospital Fort Worth South honored 130 volunteers at its thirty-ninth annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at Southern Oaks Golf Club in Burleson.  Steven Finstad and Donnie Robinson, both of Burleson, were selected as Volunteer of the Year and Rookie Volunteer of the Year, respectively.

“Every April, we gather to recognize our volunteers, who, like precious gems, are treasures. Everyone recognizes their beauty and value,” Texas Health Huguley Volunteer Services Coordinator Caryl Bean said.

In 2016, Texas Health Huguley volunteers served 29,975 hours, the equivalent of almost 15 full-time employees, which equates to approximately $314,714 in salaries.

Bean explained, “We are blessed to have volunteers in our hospital assisting in the lobby, waiting rooms, gift shop, for a total of 33 departments.  But the generosity of the volunteers is even bigger than their assigned duties.  They find and solve other needs, like providing reading glasses to patients who may have left theirs at home, or making tray favors for patients who are hospitalized on a holiday.”

In addition to donating their time, Texas Health Huguley volunteers raised more than $37,000 which they donated to 28 hospital departments for medical equipment.  Volunteers raise this money throughout the year through vendor sales of books, uniforms and accessories.

Volunteer of the Year—Steven Finstad

“We are blessed with 130 outstanding volunteers at Texas Health Huguley, so choosing the volunteer of the year is not an easy task.  That’s why I put the volunteers in charge of selecting the volunteer of the year, and they have come through with an excellent choice,” said Bean.

Finstad began volunteering at the hospital in February of 2015, after retiring from 43 years as a sales person for Coca-Cola.  He serves two mornings a week in the main lobby, helping visitors find their way.

“You could say that volunteering runs in Steven’s blood,” said Bean. “His mother, Margie Finstad, was a volunteer here several years ago.”

When not volunteering, Steven spends time with his wife Barbara, their four children and seven grandchildren.  He also enjoys working in his yard and garden.

Rookie Volunteer of the Year—Donnie Robinson

Donnie Robinson married his high school sweetheart, Judy, and one activity they enjoyed together was singing at weddings. After 53 years of marriage, she passed away last March.

He began volunteering at Texas Health Huguley two mornings eachweek in the surgery waiting room.

Robinson worked for a flooring company for 40 years before retiring. He and Judy raised two sons, and he has five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
